Description

This presentation card provides your community with all the need to know information about what to do in an emergency and calling 9-1-1.  9-1-1 is a vital service that has been responsible for saving numerous lives. Emergencies are any situation in which an individual needs immediate help from the fire department, police, or emergency medical personnel. While it may be difficult, those finding themselves in an emergency need to remain calm and call 9-1-1 for help.

The handout provides easy to understand lists of who to call for an emergency. To include the different fire, police, and medical emergencies. Individuals whose house is on fire or who see a house or building on fire should call 9-1-1. If there is a crime in progress or if someone witnesses suspicious activity call the police. Additional examples of police emergencies include car accidents and if an individual believes his or her life or another’s is in danger.

There are numerous medical emergency situations that should prompt individuals to call 9-1-1. Including, but not limited to severe allergic reactions, sudden slurred speech or blindness, drug overdoses, uncontrollable bleeding, and lost consciousness. A timely call to 9-1-1 for events like these can help to ensure that lives are not lost.

Making the Call.

As individuals may not realize that they will need to give certain information to dispatchers when calling 9-1-1. The card includes some of the more commonly asked questions. Callers should be able to describe the nature of the emergency. They will need to provide the location and street address of the emergency as well as the phone number from which they are calling. Dispatchers frequently ask about additional details. Like injuries, medical symptoms or physical descriptions of a person who is suspected of having committed a crime.

Callers need to follow all instructions given to them. Only hang up once instructed to do so. It advises that individuals who accidentally call 9-1-1 should not hang up, but instead explain to the dispatcher what has happened. It also reminds audience members that 9-1-1 is for emergencies only. 9-1-1 prank calls are illegal in most states.
