Underage Drinking

___

Alcohol Kills More Teenagers Than All Other Drugs Combined

Many teens believe that alcohol is harmless fun, but alcohol kills more teenagers than all other drugs combined.

Youth who drink are more likely to use other illegal drugs and report heavy drinking (binge drinking on at least five days of the past thirty days).

According to the National Institutes of Health, in 2013 an estimated 697,000 adolescents ages 12–17 had an alcohol use disorder. Research indicates that alcohol use during the teenage years could interfere with normal adolescent brain development and increase the risk of developing an alcohol use disorder.

Underage drinking also contributes to a range of acute consequences such as injuries, sexual assaults, and death —including those from car crashes.
