Description

Bring awareness to sexual assault to your community with this informative pamphlet. Increasing awareness about sexual assault and rape is a key element in helping to prevent these acts from happening.

This brochure begins by defining the term sexual assault. It describes sexual actions, including rape, attempted rape, and other unwanted sexual touching.

What differentiates sexual assault and rape from other sexual interactions is consent. Both individuals must have agreed to engage in the sexual act. Using force or threats make the act rape. If one individual says “No” and the act continues, then it is rape. Both parties must be old enough to consent, which, depending on the state, may be over the age of 16 or 18. Both participants must have the capacity to consent. Individuals who are drugged, drunk, or unconscious are unable to consent to sexual acts.

As with many other crimes, there is no surefire way to prevent sexual assault. However, there are steps that can reduce the risk of sexual assault. Always trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable, leave. In social situations, stay with friends and make sure they don’t leave with strangers. Do not accept drinks from strangers and make sure to always keep your drink in hand. Keep your cell phone handy and charged. When out and about be aware of your surroundings . Avoid isolated areas.

The trauma can be long-lasting. Victims frequently experience thoughts of suicide, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as feelings of guilt or shame. Plus, are more likely to develop eating disorders, physical maladies, and substance abuse issues.

The handout offers guidance for those who have been sexually assaulted or raped.

It directs them to get to a safe place and call 9-1-1. Victims should preserve all evidence of the attack and refrain from bathing, smoking, eating, or changing clothes. They should write down everything they can about the attack. This may include where and when it happened and a description of the assailant.

Victims should receive medical attention as soon as possible. A Forensic Exam should also be conducted so physical evidence of the attack can be used in legal proceedings. Also, there’s a risk for sexually transmitted diseases. Finally, the victim should take advantage of counseling or support services.

Healing from a sexual assault can be challenging. It’s important that during the healing process victims pay attention to taking care of themselves. This includes maintaining healthy eating and sleeping habits, cultivating positive personal relationships, and engaging in leisure activities.

In conclusion, the trifold notes how to help others. Don’t be a bystander if somebody is in danger. Assess the risk and offer assistance if appropriate. If there’s a risk of personal danger, call 9-1-1. But remain at the scene if possible to dissuade the attacker. At social gatherings, keep an eye out for friends. If you know someone who has been assaulted, be supportive and offer as much assistance as possible.
