    Details

In recent years, more Americans have started supporting the legalization of marijuana. However, as attitudes toward marijuana become more favorable, the more the harmful consequences of the drug are overlooked. There are over 18 million Americans who currently use marijuana. It is the second leading substance for which people seek treatment. Of those teenagers who are in drug treatment programs, 62% are dependent on marijuana. It's important for young people to know that even though some states have legal medical or recreational marijuana, that doesn't make it a safe substance.

The "Marijuana is Dangerous" pamphlet is designed to shed light on the numerous consequences of marijuana use and remind readers that it's not as innocuous as some make it out to be. Beginning with the short-term effects, readers learn that it takes just seconds for THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, to get into the bloodstream and alter the user's brain chemistry. Users may experience paranoia, anxiety, and an altered state of consciousness. They may also develop an increased heart rate and fluctuations in blood pressure.

With continued use, marijuana raises the risk for lung cancer and respiratory tract infections. Those who start using marijuana in adolescence and continue into adulthood will exhibit decreased cognitive abilities. Their memory and learning abilities may be permanently damaged. Heavy marijuana users report lower life satisfaction and more relationship problems than non-users with similar backgrounds. Women who use marijuana during their pregnancy increase their child's risk of developing poor reasoning abilities, depression, and delinquent behaviors in adolescence.

The pamphlet identifies that one of the reasons for the increased danger associated with marijuana is its rising potency. In the 1970s, marijuana had THC concentrations of less than 1%. But by 2012, the average THC concentrations were 15%, with some marijuana strains having up to a 37% THC concentration. With greater potency comes a greater risk for addiction. And the earlier an individual starts smoking marijuana, the more likely he/she is to become addicted. Over 25% of daily marijuana users are addicted to the drug.

The fact that medical marijuana is legal in several states might lead to questions from some readers. The literature explains that marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug by the DEA and that the FDA has not found that the drug's benefits outweigh its risks. Presently, there have not been enough studies to determine the usefulness of the numerous cannabis compounds in marijuana. Readers are reminded that there is a reason why marijuana is illegal in much of the United States and most other countries.
