Product Description

    Details

Opioid use has been on the rise for over a decade, resulting in a greater number of emergency room visits and a huge increase in overdose deaths. Opioid abuse is now seen in all walks of life, from large, urban cities to smaller, more rural areas. As this epidemic continues to spread, it's important that drug education programs confront this issue head on, providing individuals with the startling realities of opioid abuse.

The "In the Know: Opioids - Addiction Guaranteed" pamphlet provides a concise overview of these types of drugs. It begins by addressing the difference between opiates and opioids. While these terms are frequently used interchangeably, opiates refer to drugs derived naturally from some poppy plants, while opioids refers to opiates as well as synthetically created drugs that mimic the effects of opiates.

Opioids are frequently used therapeutically to relieve extreme pain. However, they are highly addictive and their use must be medically supervised. Common prescription opioids include oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine. There are also illegal opioids, the most well-known being heroin. Heroin can be injected, smoked, or snorted and provides users with such an intense high that it may only take one use to get hooked.

Heroin and morphine are responsible for over half of the accidental drug overdose deaths. In the U.S., it's estimated that there are about 2 million people addicted to prescription opioids.

The pamphlet continues by addressing the effects of opioids. Opioid users will experience an instantenous rush, accompanied by intense relaxation. They will have difficulty coordinating their movements and their vision and speech will be impaired. In addition, their heart rate and breathing will slow down, which could lead to coma or death. As use continues, the brain's functioning is impaired and it become unable to stop pain on its own. In the long term, opioid use causes hormonal imbalcances, osteoporosis, and emotional problems.

Once users build a tolerance to the effects of opioids, they become dependent on it. They will experience withdrawal if they attempt to stop using. Withdrawal should be medically supervised as it can be a lengthy and painful process. Unfortunately, 90% of opioid addicts will relapse in the first year of recovery. Relapse during recovery significantly increases the risk that an individual will overdose.

The concluding statements of the pamphlet address recovery. It notes that success in treatment programs depends on the individual. Opioid addictions are particularly devastating, but the cycle of addiction can be broken.
