This pamphlet explains the dangers associated with secondhand smoke, noting how friends and family of smokers may be affected. Exposure to secondhand smoke, even for a short time, can be harmful to both children and adults. Secondhand smoke comes from the burning tobacco and exhalations of smokers. Even brief exposure to secondhand smoke can be harmful to your heart and blood vessels. This brochure documents the risks and dangers, confirmed by more than 30 scientific studies.
It makes the important point that the hazards, though somewhat diminished by the banning of smoking in many public places, have not disappeared. Public smoking bans aren’t universal, and there is no legal restrictions on smoking in the home. In homes, children are the most vulnerable victims. There are more than 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, including hundreds of chemicals that are toxic and about 70 that can cause cancer. The handout also notes the numerous benefits that come with smoke free environment.
