Description

This retractable prescription drugs display helps to draw attention to the growing problems of misuse and abuse. Classified as an epidemic by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, prescription drug abuse has increased dramatically in recent years. There are more unintentional drug overdose deaths involving opioids than there are with cocaine and heroine combined.

Opioids are prescribed to relieve both mild and severe pain. They may also cause feelings of euphoria, which leads some individuals to abuse and addiction. Common prescription opioids include codeine, hydrocodone, morphine, and oxycodone. Abusing opioids may result in respiratory failure, drowsiness, coma, and death.

Another abused prescription drug are depressants. Some of the more widely used depressant are Valium, Xanax, Ambien, and phenobarbital. Often prescribed to treat individuals with anxiety disorders. They can produce effects similar to alcohol, as well as feelings of euphoria and calmness, which makes them appealing to some. Individuals who abuse depressants may experience a slowed heart rate, respiratory failure, slowed brain function, and addiction.

Also on the list of commonly abused drugs are stimulants. These drugs raise alertness and are usually prescribed to treat ADHD. Some individuals may abuse these drugs in order to improve their concentration and their school performance. However, abuse may cause an irregular heart beat, anxiety and paranoia, a high temperature, and seizures.

Using someone else’s medication or giving your medication to someone else is not only dangerous but illegal.

Misusing prescription drugs can lead to abuse and addiction. Those abusing these drugs will see several doctors to get multiple prescriptions. Take larger dosages than prescribed. Frequently refill their prescriptions and will also steal or forage to get more drugs.

Another concern that arises with prescription drugs is an abuser’s propensity to mix drugs and alcohol. This combination frequently leads to overdoses, which in some cases can be deadly. Never mix medication and alcohol.

One way to help prevent abuse is to ensure that all pills are disposed of in the proper manner. Don’t put medications in the trash or flushed down the toilet. Many times the bottle will provide disposal direction. Alternatively, community disposal drop boxes may be available or local pharmacies may have a prescription  disposal program.

The display concludes by noting that support groups, counselors, doctors, and other resources are available to help with abuse or addiction issues. Refuse to abuse and get on the path to recovery.
