Description
This rack card educates your audience about the tragedies Purple Drank has caused. Purple drank is a highly addictive mixture of codeine promethazine cough syrup, soda, and candy. This concoction has been around since the 1960s, but it became well known in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Codeine promethazine cough syrup is available by prescription only and, when used as specified, it’s an effective cough suppressant. However, it’s abused because it produces mild euphoric effects. Also known as sizzurp, purple jelly, and Texas tea. Purple Drank slows brain functioning and impairs motor skills. In excess, it slows the respiratory system and may cause cardiac arrest and seizures.
Several rappers’ deaths have been attributed to the use of Purple Drank, including DJ Screw, Big Moe, and Pimp C. Lil Wayne has also spoken out about his addiction to Purple Drank, after being hospitalized due to seizures brought on by the beverage.
In the short term, Purple Drank causes slowed and slurred speech, a loss of coordination, and drowsiness. In the long term, the beverage causes damage to the central nervous system and the brain, addiction, and death.
While it is legal to possess codeine promethazine cough syrup with a prescription, it’s still illegal to use it to make Purple Drank. Death can occur with just one use, making it more risky than rewarding for those who are drinking it.
