Description
This pamphlet provides essential, and often surprising, information about the renewed threat of syphilis. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterium. The brochure warns that newer forms of the infection are more resistant to penicillin. Once it occurs, nothing can repair damage to the body. Moreover, a person with syphilis is two to five times more likely to be infected by HIV and to transmit an HIV infection to a partner.
The pamphlet also describes symptoms and effects of the three stages of syphilis and advises the reader on ways to avoid spreading or becoming exposed to the infection, either through abstaining from sex or restricting sex to one uninfected partner. Additionally, it advises that condom use reduces but does not entirely remove the risk of syphilis infection. Readers seeking further information are referred to the “In the Know Zone” website and to the National STD hotline.
