Deciding to give up tobacco is the first step toward recovery, and may be the most important health decision that many people make in their entire lives. 

After just two years of quitting smoking, the risk of stroke can be reduced to that of a nonsmoker. Heart rate and blood pressure decrease to levels of a nonsmoker within just 2 hours of quitting. Within a year of quitting, the risk of heart disease is reduced by half.  Over 80 percent of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking, but this risk can be reduced by quitting.
