Description

This Why Quit Smoking information card is a great addition to any cessation program. It acts as a nice introduction for smokers who are ready to begin the quitting process. The handout opens by providing a broad overview of why smokers should quit. Like, improved health, more money, increased social opportunities, and the elimination of secondhand and thirdhand smoke.

It then goes on to detail exactly what happens in the body once a smoker has quit. After 20 minutes, blood pressure and heart rate return to a normal level. In 12 hours, the blood’s carbon monoxide level normalizes. After 1 year of not smoking, the risk for heart disease is half that of a smoker’s. In 5 to 15 years, the risk of stroke decreases to that of a nonsmoker’s. After 10 years, the risk of dying from lung cancer is half that of a smoker’s. And in 15 years, the risk of heart disease is the same as that of a nonsmoker.

Cigarette smoking is responsible for over 480,000 deaths each year. Smokers die an average of 10 years earlier than nonsmokers.

The remainder of the card is dedicated to covering elements that are crucial in successfully quitting. Making a Quit Plan is the first step. This plan should include when, how, and why the smoker plans to quit, as well as other information like the challenges the smoker foresees. The day before the Quit Day, smokers should remove all reminders of smoking and clean any areas in which they have smoked.

Quitting with success.

Eliminate habits that are linked with smoking. Small changes, like drinking juice instead of coffee. Taking different driving routes can also help to make the transition easier. Preparation is vital in quitting smoking and it may include going to the doctor for prescription medication or researching support groups.

Smokers who have quit may find it beneficial to focus on the reasons they quit and how they plan on rewarding themselves for the nonsmoking milestones they reach. Resources are another factor in quitting success. State quit lines and support groups can help during difficult times. A smoking journal may also be beneficial. This journal can include what things trigger nicotine cravings and how the smoker will distract him/herself from the craving.

Smokers who quit are reminded that they will have to keep their guard up during the quitting process. Cravings, urges to smoke, and withdrawal symptoms can derail quitting efforts. But focusing on staying smoke free one moment at a time will help to lead to lasting success.

In conclusion, there is a congratulatory message on the decision to quit smoking and the affirmation to Stand Up, Take Charge, and Start Your Smoke Free Life Now!
