Secondhand Smoke

___

Secondhand Smoke Harms Children and Adults

Secondhand smoke is smoke from burning tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including hundreds that are toxic and about 70 that can cause cancer.

Even brief exposure to secondhand smoke can be harmful.

Since 1964, approximately 2.5 million nonsmokers have died from health problems caused by exposure to secondhand smoke.

Most frequent exposure to secondhand smoke occurs in homes and workplaces. The only way to fully protect nonsmokers is to eliminate smoking in all homes, worksites, and public places.

Protect your family from secondhand smoke by making homes and vehicles smoke-free, opening windows, and separating smokers from nonsmokers.
