Description

The “Bullying Stinks” retractable display is a powerful tool that helps explain to young people about the facts and consequences of bullying. Over 47 percent of students report being the victim of one type of bullying or another. And as there is a strong link between bullying and suicide. It is very important that young people not only understand what bullying is, but what they can do to help prevent it.

The banner identifies bullies as people who have power over someone else and who repeatedly and purposefully hurt that person. Bullies can’t be identified by their looks, but they can be identified by their actions. Bullies may hurt other people because they feel superior or insecure, or because they have also been bullied.

Bullying Hurts Everyone!

Victims of bullying experience feelings of fear, anxiety, depression, and loneliness. They may also have suicidal thoughts or low self esteem. Bullies experience lasting consequences from their actions too. By the age of 24, 60% of bullies have a criminal conviction and 40% of them have three or more convictions.

Bullies can target anyone, but they usually pick on those who are different. These differences may include anything from hairstyles and clothing to race. Bullies also go after children who appear vulnerable. These kids may seem that they’re easily upset, scared or appear helpless. Children who are frequently isolated or alone are common targets.

The banner also explains that to reduces the risk of being bullied to develop strong relationships, find allies, and be a good friend. A strong sense of self confidence is also likely to deter a bully. Children should avoid places where bullies hang out and try not to draw attention to themselves when bullies are around.

Even with preventative measures, however, some children are still targeted by bullies. If this happens, some of the preventative steps previously mentioned can help to quell the bullying. Demonstrating confidence, strength, and composure in response to bullying shows bullies that their actions don’t have an effect and they will be less likely to continue. Traveling with groups of friends prevents bullies from having an easy target to pick on. Do not respond with violence. Bullies want to get attention because of their actions. But when a victim walks away and ignores the bully, the bully loses.

Cyberbullying

This type of bullying is becoming more and more prevalent because of the numerous social media sites that exist. Saying mean or threatening things about someone else online or through text messages are some forms of cyberbullying. And in some states, it’s illegal.

Victims of cyberbullying should take steps to block the bully. Many social media sites allow users to prevent other users from sending them messages. Block the email addresses and phone numbers as well. If that doesn’t work, save all the evidence of harassment. Whether the evidence includes emails, instant messages, or online posts. With evidence in hand, the victim should report the abuse to a trusted adult.

Above all else, victims of bullying should talk about their experiences so that they don’t suffer in silence. Don’t be afraid to stand up to bullies. When everyone stands up for what is right, the bullying will stop.
